WHAT IS SENSORY PROCESSING?
SENSORY PROCESSING IS THE EFFECTIVE INTERPRETATION OF SENSORY INPUT FROM THE ENVIRONMENT. THIS INPUT COMES FROM THE CLASSIC SENSES MOST OF US KNOW, AS WELL AS A PERSON’S SENSE OF BODY AWARENESS, INTERNAL STATE, AND MOVEMENT.
In simple terms, if a child can’t sit still, can’t focus on tasks, and/or has emotional and behavioral outbursts, he/she/they might be having difficulty with sensory processing skills. If a child is resistant to eating certain foods, doesn’t like the touch of certain materials, or appears to have very low energy, this may also be the case.
